Facing challenges associated with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD) is not limited to the group of patients having this diagnosis. To illustrate, a number of adults have difficulties concentrating that impede their functioning in society adequately. The latter means that they cannot plan and organise their activity in a way that guarantees qualitative and timely performance of tasks. Nevertheless, these difficulties can be resolved by applying certain tools and methods.
In my 18 years of experience, it is not about distractions and organising ourselves better. It is about the daily routines and schedules that are good for us. Here are a few methods and advice that will help adults who suffer from ADHD cope with it and be more productive in general.
Simple Habits to Make Life Easier
Dealing with a low attention span is not easy; it is very difficult to deal with,h but it can easily be overcome if we follow a certain lifestyle that includes a constant schedule in our everyday life and a good amount of sleep, along with daily physical activities and the help of professionals, resulting in self-care.
1. Arrange a pattern that suits you
The schedule can help you get a better structure and manage your time more efficiently to feel less stressed and have an opportunity to make better choices in general. Some such habits may include waking up at the same time every day and preparing meals in advance so that you can cook them for the whole week in one day, which will give you more hours to work and make you more productive, and going to bed for at least 7-8 hours every day so that you can be well-rested and make fewer mistakes.
Start developing the habit that seems to be the easiest for you for now. After you get used to it, proceed to the next one and add it to your daily routine.
2. Divide Tasks into Smaller Parts
Adults face the most common challenge of people with attention deficit hyperactivity disorder (ADHD), getting easily overwhelmed with complex tasks. This can be solved by dividing the given work into smaller assignments.
For instance, in case an adult has a project to do as his or her priority task, the main idea to do it would be breaking it into smaller assignments such as gathering the required data and designing the project’s structure, filling the project with the obtained information, and proofreading the work to ensure its high quality.
3. Focus On Minimizing Distraction
Creating a suitable working environment that facilitates concentration is one of the best solutions to poor attention and lack of focus.
It is essential to work in a quiet room where incoming calls and messages are turned off to ensure a better working environment. Secondly it is important to set aside a specific period of time for working on the given task to achieve better results.
4. Start Focusing On Physical Activities
Daily physical activities are essential to one’s physical well-being, but they also have a significant effect on one’s mental health. Exercise is an extremely important activity because it helps to sharpen one’s mind, which in turn helps one to have more control over one’s emotions, thus reducing one’s stress levels and improving one’s concentration abilities.
A sport which can be performed on a daily basis is walking for an hour and biking for an hour for cardiovascular exercises, or swimming as a way to relax. Yoga is vital to relaxing one’s mind; therefore, it is important to perform it to improve one’s concentration ability and level of energy.
5. Practice Self-Care and Development
Good lifestyle habits are essential in managing ADHD. For example, proper sleep with a healthy diet and hydration are vital in promoting stress-reduction strategies that improve concentration and prevent emotional crises. Some of the strategies that may be recommended for people suffering from it include meditation and taking short breaks to relieve pressure, which in turn improves an individual’s ability to focus on crucial tasks.
6. Time Management Accordingly
Adults with an ADHD diagnosis have difficulties in estimating the time needed to perform particular tasks during engagement in various activities. Time management helps such individuals to maximise their performance while minimising pressures caused by deadlines.
The utilisation of stopwatches and timers to maintain concentration on important tasks is an excellent strategy for managing time. It is advisable to set alarms to remind you of upcoming appointments to ensure there is enough time to carry out critical duties and avoid being hurried during the whole process
7. Seeking Professional Help On Time
The self-management techniques described above can be effective in managing this condition. However, in some instances the opinion of a medical professional may be required. If symptoms start interfering with work, as well as social aspects and relationships, it may be time to seek professional assistance. The doctor can provide behaviour therapy along with an ADHD coach and prescribe drugs if needed.
Final thoughts
Although it may be challenging, the situation when a person has ADHD in adults becomes an opportunity for them to learn something new or find a way to cope with it. Firstly, it is critical to create habits to help one stay focused and not distracted. Secondly, it is important to invest time and effort into developing oneself in order to get relevant results because one has to try to achieve the result.
Even though it may be exhausting and time-consuming, the situation will allow a person to realise small victories that will positively affect their life in the future. Thus, in general, with proper approaches and expert help, if necessary, ADHD may be controlled so that a person can have a healthy and comfortable life. If you are facing problems with attention span and your personal and professional life is affected by it, then schedule a consultation with experienced therapists who understand not just the problem but the reasons deeply rooted in the system in a detailed way, with family relationship counselling and more.
